Are you looking for Copywriter Jobs?

No matter what career your are thinking about, everything has a starting point, and here are a few pointers to help you in searching for and securing copywriting jobs.

Copywriting Jobs

Copywriting Jobs are plentiful - so how do you find them?

The first thing to look at is are you looking to become a permanent or freelance copywriter? This is important because depending on the path you choose, then this will determine the route into the job.

For the sake of argument, we shall assume you are looking for a freelance copywriter job.

Step 1 - Your Writing Skills

No-one is going to hire a copywriter who cannot write – that is a fact, sadly. If you are looking for a copywriting job, what you need to do is assess your writing skills and see where your weak spots lie (and you will have weak spots). Now here is where it gets a little more awkward because how comfortable are you at picking holes in and critiquing your own work? It isn’t easy!

The reason self critique isn’t easy is because you have to be very critical of something you have just written. You need to be quite anal about it and not be afraid of recognising where you need to brush up your skills.

If you can’t do this yourself, then write a series of short articles on a chosen subject and ask a friend to read through them for you. Ask them to be hard but fair in what they read and whatever you do, never take a critique personally – it is a means to an end and will allow you to grow and develop your skills.

Step 2 – Making a Name for Yourself

A daunting stage in any copywriters’ career is writing that first piece – you will submit this and still be unsure in your abilities to be able to write. However, before you get there, you can be sure that no-one will hire a copywriter who has no reference documents or testimonials. Copywriting jobs are not hard to find, but you can be sure that your potential clients will be fussy about who they choose!

Building a brand and brand awareness

How to stand out from the crowd

A good way to make a name for yourself is to write for free. Whilst this might sound like a huge waste of time, it is a great way to get your name out there. After all, in 12 months time, you will be wanting to point potential customers to work you have completed – what happens if you have none?

Think about your desired subject then do a Google search for this. Find 20 sites and offer to write each of them an article for free. All you ask is that you are recognised as the author of that document. In terms of recognition, your name at the foot of the document will suffice.

This is just one way to get your name out there – be creative because there are many more ways to achieve this! In time, your reputation will become your brand so it is important to get this exactly right.

Step 3 – What To Charge

There are two areas that play a part in this:

  • Your location, and
  • Your proficiency level

No matter where you are, you need to make sure that you charge enough to make a living. Probably the biggest factor here is how well you can write.

A professional copywriter can charge themselves out at anything from £20 to £140 per 500 word document, but if you are at the higher end  of this pay-scale, you had better be able to produce content of the highest quality! If someone is paying £100+ for a document, they will want it to be perfect for their needs.

Step 4 – Should I Specialise?

This is something that is very much down to you and own personal preference. It will have both its good and bad points.

  • Positives - You will learn your niche and have to do less research when writing. You will become known as a specialist in that field only.
  • Negatives - You will limit your client-base hugely. This will have a direct impact on earning potentials, unless you specialise in a market that can sustain on-going work for you.

My own personal feelings on this are just that… my own personal feelings, and I decided many years ago that my writing styles and research capabilities were strong enough to allow me to write at any level and for any industry / discipline. This I have proven thousands of times over many years.

Copywriting jobs are plentiful. Not everyone has the time, or indeed, the required skills to write content for a specific purpose – and this is a job that a computer will never be able to do!

The skill in copywriting is writing content that is so compelling to the reader, that they will want to continue to the end. This comes from well formed sentences and paragraphs, grammar and topic.
